C++ is dying

As the world moves on to higher-level programming languages like F#, demand for C++ programmers is at an all-time low. According to IT Jobs Watch, the number of UK job postings citing C++ is continuing to fall at a rate of 40% per year. Market share of C++ among programming languages has fallen from 30% to 15% over the past four years:

This has prompted employers to offer salaries up to $208k in order to secure members of the increasingly-rare breed that is C++ programmers.

The results on this benchmark of multiple requests to servers provide some insight into the performance characteristics of .NET on a modern problem. Specifically, the C# on ASP.NET Core solutions range from 2.5-80× slower than fastest solution which is written in Rust. What's new in garbage collection?

Since the 1950s there have been three main families of collectors: semi-space, mark-sweep and mark-compact. Almost all production GCs have been generational mark-sweep even though they exhibit pathological performance when the nursery is full of survivors because they are marked, (physically) copied and all references to them updated which is ~3x slower than necessary and is practically useful when filling a hash table with heap-allocated keys and/or values. The Beltway (2002) and Immix (2008) garbage collectors introduced the new family called the mark-region GCs. With a mark-region GC the entire heap is a collection of regions and so is the nursery generation so it can be logically aged by replacing it with another region when it is full of survivors. As a garbage collector runs it recycles unreachable values. A well known result in GC theory is that values tend to die in "clumps" rather than individually. This post visualizes these clumps.
